Large deposits of cholesterol can completely block the inner passage in the artery.

When Should I Start Having My Cholesterol Checked?

Men aged 35 and older and women aged 45 and older should have their cholesterol checked once a year. Depending on what your cholesterol level is and what other risk factors for heart disease you have. You may need to have it checked more often.

You already had a heart attack

You are a man 45 years of age or older

You are a women 55 years of age or older

You are a woman who is going through menopause or has completed menopause

Your immediate family member, parent or sibling who had heart disease

If you are overweight or obese

If you live an inactive lifestyle

If your total cholesterol is high because of a high LDL cholesterol, you may be at higher risk of heart disease or stroke. If your total cholesterolo level is high only because of a high HDL cholesterol level, you're not at higher risk.

Total Cholesterol

Less than 200 is best. 200 to 239 is borderline high. 240 or more means you're at increased risk for heart disease.

Ldl Cholesterol

Below 100 is ideal for people who have a higher risk of heart disease. 100 to 129 is near optimal 130 to 159 is borderline high 160 or more means you're at a higher risk for heart disease

Hdl Cholesterol

If you have high cholesterol, make some lifestyle changes.

If you smoke, stop smoking and exercise regularly.

If you're overweight, losing just 5 to 10 pounds can help lower your cholesterol levels.

Make sure to eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fish. All these food will help promote your heart health.
