Cholesterol Medication, or drugs Market - A Snapshot
It is interesting to note how the cholesterol medication, or drugs are selling in the aftermath of the failure of Niaspan, which failed to perform in preventing heart attacks or stroke in heart procedures. Another concern is the near expiration on the patent for Lipitor.(Another cholesterol lowering medication)
Out of curiosity, I ask myself a simple question. What does the market for cholesterol drugs look like these days? There is also another factor, as the expiration on the patent for Lipitor draws near.
For a quick and straight forward solution, a trip to IMS Health, which tracks prescription data provided the answer. IMS Health provided the annual prescription data for top cholesterol medication/drugs going back five years. It shows dramatically how things have changed over the past few years.
The generic simvastation, which used to be sold as Zocor by Merck, has taken over the lion’s share of the market. This is the main reason for the decline in the use of Lipitor, which has remained the best-selling drug in the world.
There is also the precipitous decline in the use of ezetimibe, the active ingredient in both Vytorin and Zetia. This is because of the controversy over its effectiveness at preventing heart attacks.
However, Niaspan, made by Abbott Laboratories, had been increasing, although it was a pretty small player in the cholesterol medication/drug market.
The biggest winner is AstraZeneca’s Crestor. But, no new cholesterol drug has come close to generating the kind of mass-market use, like Lipitor and Zocor.
