What must you do to lower total cholesterol levels and especially LDL cholesterol levels?

Here are some easy ways:

1. Use only nonfat or lowfat dairy products, including milk, yogurt and cheese. Regular dairy products, like whole milk, butter, cheese, cream cheese and ricotta cheese, are high in saturated fat.

2. Avoid foods with trans-fat. This fat comes from partially hydrogenated vegetable oils, found in fried foods and processed foods such as crackers, baked food and desserts.

3. Limit intake of sugar and fructose. This will help lower triglycerides, aid weight loss and lower LDL cholesterol levels.

4. Eat foods naturally high in fiber, especially soluble fiber. Soluble fiber is found in legumes, fruits and root vegetables, oats, barley and flax. They are also found in fruits like apples, pears, and bananas. For every 1 or 2 grams of soluble fiber you eat daily, you lower LDL cholesterol by 1 percent.

5. Loose weight. Exercising several times per week can help you to loose extra weight, and that weight loss can lower LDL cholesterol. Most doctors say that loosing 10% of a person's body weight can have a significant impact of LDL levels.

6. Reduce saturated fats in your diet. An easy way to remember is saturated fats are commonly found in animal products and meats such as beef, milk, and cream. Reducing these fats in your diet can significantly reduce LDL cholesterol levels.

7. Eat 2 servings of fish per week. The Omega-3 fatty acids in fish are wonderful for the heart, and they help reduce bad cholesterol levels in the blood as well.
